FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
For what kind of issues do people come to therapy?
People come to therapy for all sorts of issues. Some people come to therapy because they are feeling unwell, such as experiencing anxiety or depression that interferes with their life. Many people come to therapy to improve communication, relationships, self-esteem, and confidence. People also appreciate coming to therapy to talk to someone about stressors in their lives, such as work, parenting, or challenging relationships. Therapy can also help people process difficult things that have happened to them or prepare for an upcoming life transition. There is no right or wrong reason to come to therapy. Please reach out if you have questions about whether therapy is right for you.
Is online therapy right for me?
We have all seen movies or television shows where a character is receiving therapy in an office setting, maybe sitting on a comfy-looking sofa. Although many people did not become aware of online therapy until the pandemic began in 2020, teletherapy has been around for quite awhile. Research shows that online therapy is equally as effective as in-person therapy. Additionally, online therapy can reduce barriers to attending sessions regularly, such as transportation or time constraints. I have clients who attend therapy from their office during their lunch break or at home after their children leave for school. While some people may feel that online therapy isn't for them, many folks find it to be convenient and effective.
Is therapy confidential?
Yes, and many people believe that confidentiality is the hallmark of therapy. I am ethically and legally required to keep what you share with me between just the two of us. Maintaining confidentiality helps clients trust their counselor, which creates a safe space to work through issues.
wHAT HAPPENS IN THE FIRST SESSION?
Prior to our first session, I will ask you to fill out some forms to help me know some basic information about you. Our first session will begin with introducing myself, sharing information with you about the counseling process, and addressing questions and concerns you may have. Next I will talk to you about why you are seeking therapy at this time. I want to understand not only the challenges you are experiencing, but also explore your strengths and what is going right. It is helpful for me to learn about your current life - family, relationships, work, school, hobbies, etc. - and things from your past that may be significant. We will also talk about your goals and collaborate on a plan to work together to work toward achieving them. Usually by the end of the first session clients have a sense of whether or not therapy with me is a good fit for them. If it doesn't feel right, we can work through that, either by changing up the way we are doing things, or by helping you find a therapist who may be a better fit.
