about
Many of us experienced trauma as children. Trauma occurs in myriad ways, including, but not limited to abuse, neglect, poverty, discrimination, harsh or inconsistent parenting, divorce, bullying, and loss. When we become parents, we hope we can avoid passing on to our children the manifestation of our own trauma. Parenting as we manage the effects of our own trauma history triggers complex feelings and behaviors; too often, we feel unseen, misunderstood, guilty, and ashamed. The purpose of this group is to learn about the ways childhood trauma shows up in our parenting and identify tools for managing the effects of our trauma so we can parent in ways that align with our values. Topics of focus include: recognizing and understanding your trauma experience; identifying how your trauma "shows up" in your adult life; attachment; parenting beliefs and styles; learning to trust; developing self-compassion; setting and communicating healthy boundaries; creating a safe, nurturing space for our children. We will explore these topics through a supportive community and utilizing practices such as mindfulness, journaling, and compassionate listening.
Please note that this group is not intended as a substitute for psychotherapy. Participants may benefit from seeking therapy in addition to their group participation. I am happy to provide referrals for those interested in entering therapy.
